What is Nursing Professionalism

Nursing professionalism is a framework that distinguishes the work of nursing as a specialized field, distinct from mere occupations through two principal facets: preparation and commitment (Fitzgerald, 2020). At its core, nursing is a profession rooted in the educational foundation provided by colleges and advanced education. This education is what gives nursing professionals a deep understanding of a specialized body of knowledge and technical competencies integral to healthcare. However, the preparation is more than the acquisition of knowledge and skills; it also includes the art of holistic indoctrination into the profession's values, beliefs, and attitudes. This indoctrination is very important, as it aligns the professional with the ethical standards and practice norms expected in nursing, and thus creates a unified professional identity.

It involves a dedication to continuous learning, adherence to ethical principles, and an ongoing responsibility to contribute to the advancement of the profession. Nurses are expected to engage in lifelong learning to keep abreast of medical advancements and evolving healthcare practices, ensuring their competence and the quality of care provided to patients remains at the highest standard (Smith et al., 2021).

In essence, nursing professionalism is characterized by a unique blend of specialized knowledge, ethical practice, and a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement. It is through this lens that nursing distinguishes itself as a profession, committed to providing holistic, compassionate, and scientifically-based care to those in need.
